Martin Powell is Prof of Health and Social Policy at the Health Services Management Centre, School of Social Policy, University of Birmingham. His main research interests include the history of the British welfare state. He is the editor of the UK  ‘New Labour trilogy’ (1999, 2002, 2008) and is a co-editor of a 2016 text on the UK Coalition  government. He is currently edited a text (with Hugh Bochel) on the current UK Conservative government.

Ben Ledger-Jessop is a Doctoral Candidate in the Centre for Regional, Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam. His research is focused on the experience of work-based harms by migrants and the challenges in supporting such workers through trade unions.

Dr Bob Jeffery* is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Politics (PSP) at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). His interests centre on social and class inequalities and he has undertaken work on gentrification, protest and policing, punitive welfare reform and voting. His most recent work centres on low paid and precarious work in the Sheffield City Region, and debates around trade union renewal.

Dr Peter Thomas is Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Politics in PSP at SHU. He has interests in political economy, labour markets and welfare reform, welfare theory, social policy, and research methods. His most recent work includes research on low paid and precarious work in the Sheffield City Region, as well as a three-level cluster randomised efficacy trial of dialogic teaching.
